Before last night, you would have to go back to the 2014-15 football season to point to a win in the Western League for the University High School Wildcats. In a game that came down to the last play to decide the winner, the Wildcats managed to end their league win drought that spanned just over a decade.
University High School’s football team faced off against the Hamilton High School Yankees. The two teams traded two early first quarter touchdowns and were knotted at 7-7. Hamilton managed to strike again before the end of the first quarter and held a 14-7 lead for the majority of the remainder of the first half until a costly fumble resulted in a scoop and score, courtesy of Messiah Burton, for the Wildcats just before the end of the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Wildcats would strike first in the fourth quarter to take a 21-14 lead. A touchdown pass from Thaddeus Breaux to Jacob Riley would bring the Yankees within one point. Hamilton elected to go for two, but they failed on the attempt, leaving the score 21-20. The Wildcats added on another touchdown just before the two-minute timeout, but a mishap on their PAT resulted in an unsuccessful attempt.
Down 27-20, Hamilton marched down the field to score a touchdown to come within one point. They again elected to go for a two-point conversion for the win. Unfortunately for the Yankees, they were unable to convert, and the Wildcats came out with the win in front of a packed homecoming crowd.
